As autumn settles in and we spend more time indoors, RSV season also begins. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the lungs and respiratory tract. For many, RSV may only cause mild, cold-like symptoms. But infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for complications. In these cases, RSV can lead to more serious illnesses like bronchiolitis or pneumonia. It is the leading cause of hospitalization for children under 5 years old.

The virus is highly contagious and spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, close contact, and even by touching contaminated surfaces. The good news is that we now have reliable ways to help protect our most vulnerable loved ones.

  • Protection for Infants: A one-time injection of “Beyfortus (Nirsevimab)” monoclonal antibodies can help protect infants from RSV. This treatment is recommended for all infants younger than 8 months during RSV season and for children 8-19 months old who are at higher risk entering their second season of potential exposure.
  • Protection for Adults: “Abrysvo” is a one-time RSV vaccine for adults 75 and older, adults 60-74 with chronic health conditions (including heart or lung disease, diabetes, or obesity), and pregnant women between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy. Pregnant women who receive this vaccine during pregnancy have the added benefit of potentially passing on immunity to the newborn.
