Chronic Illness and a Healthy Life

To help children with chronic conditions live life to the fullest, we provide primary care for children with asthma, ADHD, autism, and down syndrome. We will work with you and your child to maintain health by discussing wellness, nutrition, and prevention.

It is important to come to terms with living with childhood chronic conditions in order to live healthily. This means understanding that these conditions should never prevent children from thriving or participating.

At Primary Care Partners of South Bend, we understand that chronic illness can seem uncertain. However, children with chronic conditions can live healthy, happy lives and their condition should never hold them back. Our mission is to provide every child with high-quality care and the respect and dignity that they deserve.

Treating Chronic Conditions

While many children may face medical problems in their lives, chronic conditions are different. Chronic conditions will affect every day of a child’s life. These conditions normally do not have a cure and last more than 3 months.  They usually affect regular childhood activities like sports and school. Also, they will require more doctor visits or home care than normal. At Primary Care Partners of South Bend, we specifically treat Asthma and ADHD.

Asthma

When a child has asthma, the lungs and airways become inflamed much easier and more often. Inflammation can be caused by a variety of triggers. Although, the most common include exercise, inhaling pollen, cold air, or respiratory infections like a cold or COVID-19. At Primary Care Partners of South Bend, we will work together to treat your child’s asthma and help them live a healthy life.

Symptoms of asthma include frequent coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. These symptoms can lead to difficulty in doing daily activities like playing, running, and even sleeping. If left untreated, dangerous asthma attacks can occur. When you notice these symptoms in your child, request an appointment with Primary Care Partners of South Bend right away. We can begin creating a treatment plan which may include an inhaler, lifestyle changes, and more frequent visits.

ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental disorder. For children with ADHD, it is more difficult to sit still, pay attention, or practice self-control. At Primary Care Partners of South Bend, we understand children with ADHD and are trained to treat the disorder.

While it is important to watch for abnormal symptoms in your child, any child may experience individual ADHD symptoms. If you suspect any of these symptoms are affecting your child’s daily life, schedule an appointment for further evaluation. Symptoms of ADHD in children include difficulty waiting their turn during activities or conversation, inappropriate emotional outbursts, or inability to sit still. Also, they may have trouble following directions, keeping track of their duties, or finishing tasks like chores or homework.

We are passionate about caring for children with several types of conditions with the respect they deserve. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact us online or call (574)251-1200 so we can begin a treatment plan today.
